Atlético Madrid against the Super League: “We want to protect the European football family”

Following the European Court of Justice’s ruling that the Super League can go ahead, Atlético Madrid have come out against the idea.

The CJEU ruled that UEFA and FIFA had a “dominant abuse of power” and that they can do nothing to stop its creation. The original idea was shot down around two years ago when UEFA threatened to sanction clubs who tried to take part. However, as of now, the Super League could come to fruition by the 2025-26 season. While Real Madrid and Barcelona have expressed their support for the verdict, there are others who have come out against the plan, most notably La Liga president Javier Tebas.

Atlético Madrid released the following statement (adapted from Marca):

“The resolution on the prior authorization framework for other competitions refers to old UEFA statutes that were already modified in June 2022.

“The European Club Association (ECA) and UEFA have created a partnership that makes the suggestion that UEFA is a monopoly meaningless since the clubs, by virtue of the agreements adopted within this joint venture, decide 50/50 to whom the sponsorship and television rights are sold and the distribution of said income, as well as the competition formats.

“The European football family does not want the European Super League. Germany, France, England, Italy, Spain (except for Real Madrid and Barcelona), etc. They don’t want the Super League. We are in favor of protecting the great family of European football, of protecting the domestic leagues and through them achieving qualification for European competitions on the field of play each season.”
