Jan Siewert is in “pole position” for the permanent job as Mainz coach, says Martin Schmidt.
Since taking over as interim coach following the departure of Bo Svensson, Jan Siewert has led Mainz to seven points in seven games.
And judging by what Mainz sporting director Martin Schmidt said after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund, that could be enough to get him the permanent job.
“He has stabilized the team with seven points in seven games,” Schmidt said, adding:
“He has done a great job and is certainly in pole position.
“We’ll go home, get together in the next few days and decide what to do next,” Schmidt said.
Tuesday’s draw left Mainz in 15th place ahead of the remaining matches on Matchday 16.
