Rennes have been drawn against Serie A giants AC Milan in the Europa League knockout play-off round. Les Rouge et Noir finished second in Group F of the Europa League behind Spanish side Villarreal after narrowly losing 3-2 in their final group game last Thursday. Rennes beat Israeli outfit Maccabi Haifa and Greek side Panathinaikos to continue their European journey. Julien Stephan’s side will face last season’s Champions League semi-finalists in February ahead of the Europa League round of 16.
Milan faced Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League ‘group of death’, but after one defeat (2-1) and one win (2-1) against Les Parisiens finished third to drop into the Europa League play-offs.
The Europa League play-off knockout round involves the eight runners up from the Europa League group stage against the eight third-placed teams in the Champions League group stage. The winners of these two-legged matches will head to the Europa League round of 16 in March, where they’ll join the eight group winners.
