With Hamburg currently falling behind in the race for promotion and current coach Tim Walter’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Bild has listed potential candidates to replace Walter.
The future of Walter has come into doubt lately as Hamburg have struggled falling behind rivals St.Pauli and playing poorly. After an unconvincing loss to Paderborn last weekend, if Hamburg loses again and plays poorly, Walter could be fired.
If Hamburg do sack Walter there could be several individuals who could replace him. André Breitenreiter and Friedhelm Funkel are more realistic options both have a good relationship with Hamburg sporting director Jonas Boldt while also having a link to the club with Breitenreiter previously playing for HSV and Funkel’s wife being a fan of the club.
Former Union Berlin boss Urs Fischer is seen as too expensive for Hamburg while the current 1.FC Köln coach Steffan Baumgart is another option. Baumgart has been a Hamburg fan since he was young and was even a candidate for the job in 2021 and if for whatever reason Köln fires Baumgart, Hamburg could make a move.
