Florian Wirtz remains a doubt for Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga clash away to VFB Stuttgart on Sunday.

Wirtz went off with a knock in Wednesday’s 3-1 DFB-Pokal win over Paderborn, and at Friday’s press conference, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso still wasn’t sure if the young attacker would be fit to face Stuttgart.

“He was in individual training today. We take it day by day. We have to wait for tomorrow and then we’ll have another day before Sunday. We have the last training session tomorrow and then we’ll see. It’s too early to say,” said Xabi Alonso.

Pressed for more details on Wirtz’s injury, he said:

“It’s not a big injury. One day can be very important, so let’s wait and see.

“It is better. He’s getting better every day.”

Asked if Amine Adli will be called upon to replace Wirtz if he is not deemed fit enough to start, the Spaniard replied:

“We haven’t decided what to do. Of course we have options. It’s too early to decide. I always want to be optimistic, and right now I have reason to be optimistic, but we have to wait a little bit longer.”
