Müller laments penalty calls in Copenhagen draw

Thomas Müller has questioned two controversial penalty calls in the second half of Bayern Munich’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Thomas Müller has bemoaned two penalty calls that went against Bayern Munich in Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.

The 34-year-old went down in the second half after being pushed in the back by a Copenhagen defender, but his appeals were waved away by the referee.

“That push with two arms is so obvious that you can give it for stupidity. That’s not using your body, that’s pushing your opponent away,” Müller said in the mixed zone after the match.

Later in the second half, referee Stéphanie Frappart pointed to the spot after the ball hit Peter Ankersen’s hand in the box, but she reversed the decision after a VAR review.

Referring to the penalty awarded to Paris Saint-Germain against Newcastle United on Tuesday, Müller felt the initial decision should have stood.

“Personally, I wouldn’t have given the handball penalty either, but I think it was a penalty according to the rules, especially if you look at the one from yesterday. I’m not a fan of the rule, but if it’s there, it’s strange that the penalty wasn’t whistled yesterday, but it was given, and today it was whistled, but it wasn’t given.

“The referee should decide subjectively based on some criteria. Nobody is happy at the moment, I don’t know if the people at FIFA are sitting in the room saying that the hand rule is great at the moment, but I don’t think so,” said Müller.
