SC Freiburg trainer Christian Streich revealed that Germany U21 international Merlin Röhl would in all likelihood be unavailable for the weekend encounter against SV Darmstadt 98.

Already missing captain Christian Günter and defender Lukas Kübler, SC Freiburg will have to do without one of their most in-form attackers in Saturday’s league encounter against Darmstadt. SCF trainer Christian Streich revealed that Merlin Röhl would “in all likelihood” be unavailable after incurring an injury whilst representing the German U21 squad on Tuesday.
Röhl suffered a deep laceration resulting from a hard tackle by Poland’s Kajetan Szmyt in the 68th minute of Tuesday’s victory. Though the 21-year-old was able to play through the pain and even score a goal himself, Streich noted that, “annoyingly”, he would have to do without the flexible attacker who has breathed some life into his squad in recent weeks.
Röhl started in four of Freiburg’s last six fixtures, scoring notably beautiful goals in both the Europa League and the most recent league encounter against Leipzig. Should stretch wish to retain his current system, Japanese international Ritsu Doan counts as the most likely replacement for Röhl’s role as a supporting attacker.
