Mats Hummels says there’s plenty of room for improvement after Germany’s 2-0 loss to Austria.
After Germany’s 2-0 loss to Austria, Mats Hummels called on the German national team to improve their mentality and teamwork.
“Only after the red card did we start to fight emotionally and with spirit. A defense is not just a defense and an offense is not just an offense – everything has to work together. As a team, we need to get our act together,” said the veteran.
“That’s not enough against a top nation,” he added.
On new Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s tactics, Hummels said it would take time to “implement things”.
“I think we still have some very big steps to take. We now know very clearly where we need to improve. Then it can be a good [European Championship] tournament, but not at the moment.”
