After Saturday’s heavy defeat to Bayern Munich, Dortmund looked to bounce back to form against Newcastle. In the end, Edin Terzic’s side did just that securing a vital 2-0 win in Group F.

Die Schwarzgelben started in the ascendency from the first whistle with Brandt enjoying plenty of open field in the opening half. Nick Pope’s first involvement came in the 13th minute as he repelled a powerful Fullkrug strike. This was swiftly followed by Adeyemi stinging the English goalkeeper’s palms.

Dortmund would eventually find the breakthrough in the 26th minute. A fine one-two between Fullkrug and Sabitzer allowed the German to place the ball in the net’s roof between both Trippier and Pope on the line. Gregor Kobel had little to do aside from holding onto ex-Hoffenheim man Joelinton’s goal bound header.

The introduction of Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almiron gave BVB something to think about after the interval. Joelinton spurned a guilt-edged opportunity in that time. But it was a short-lived spell of dominance for the English club as Brandt tested Pope once more.

As nerves started to grow for both sides, the game was put to bed on the counterattack in the 79th minute. Karim Adeyemi fed Julian Brandt on the left who tore past Schar and hammer past Pope into the bottom right corner. In doing so, Dortmund open up a 3-point gap with Eddie Howe’s outfit.
