Borussia Mönchengladbach have confirmed that defender Ko Itakura will miss the next few weeks as he recovers from surgery on his ankle.
Itakura has been dealing with persistent problems in his ankle and surgery was a necessary procedure. The surgery is set to take place on Friday.
The 26-year-old was already absent from Gladbach’s 3-1 loss to 1.FC Köln in the Rhein Derby last weekend and the lack of his presence was felt in the defence as they were dominated by Köln for most of the game. Since joining Manchester City last summer, Itakura has been one of Gladbach’s most consistent players in a period where the club has been struggling on the pitch.
Gladbach are currently 13th in the Bundesliga, two points clear of the relegation zone with only one win. With a run of difficult fixtures against Freiburg, Wolfsburg and Dortmund on the horizon things could continue to get worse for Gladbach with the absence of their best defender.
