Sky Germany reports that Fredi Bobic has been in contact with VfB Stuttgart to become their sporting director at the club after leaving Hertha Berlin earlier this year.
Bobic had previously held the director of football as well as the Sporting CEO roles at the club between 2010 and 2014 whilst also spending five years at the club as a player between 1994 and 1999. His former club had contacted him over his availability but a return is currently unlikely.
The board in charge of choosing a new sporting director is still compiling a list of potential candidates and only once the list has been completed can concrete talks between parties begin. Bobic himself also does not see a return to Stuttgart as a desirable career goal.
Bobic’s last job was as sporting director for now relegated Hertha Berlin. During his time at the club, Bobic failed to capitalise and live up to the reputation that he had built at Eintracht Frankfurt and was one of the reasons for Hertha’s decline over the past two years.
A possible alternative for Stuttgart is that Fabian Wohlgemuth, who only joined in December last year but helped turn the club around to a surprise package this season, could be given a promotion.
