Borussia Dortmund eye move for former Coventry striker Gyokeres

Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are reportedly monitoring Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to reports from Portuguese media (via Bild).

The 25-year-old Swedish sensation switched to Sporting CP during the summer transfer window following a stellar season with Coventry City.

His 21-goal tally propelled Coventry City to the Championship playoff final, where they narrowly lost to Luton Town in a heartbreaking penalty shootout.

Gyokeres has seamlessly adapted to life in the Portuguese top flight, netting an impressive six goals this season. He was voted the league’s September Player of the Month.

Gyokeres has captured the attention of the Borussia Dortmund hierarchy.

However, the potential transfer to the Bundesliga juggernaut is not so straightforward.

There is an abundance of attacking options at Dortmund’s disposal. Sebastian Haller, Youssoufa Moukoko, and Niclas Fullkrug are all vying for a spot in Edin Terzic’s side.

There is no pressing need for additional reinforcements in the attacking department.

Niclas Fullkrug recently cemented his position as Germany’s starting striker and will look to do the same at Dortmund.

However, Dortmund could be preparing to let go of Haller, who has been in dire form since the latter parts of last season. Based on form, Fullkrug should take his place in the starting eleven.

Also, Moukoko has struggled to adapt to Terzic’s tactical system despite starring for Germany’s Under-21.

Looking to the summer 2024 transfer window, Dortmund might consider parting ways with Haller and Moukoko, potentially paving the way for a move to sign Gyokeres.

However, it’s essential to note that such a transfer will come at a substantial cost. Gyokeres’ contract includes a hefty €100 million release clause.

Also, if Gyokeres continues to perform like this, many more parties will take interest, making it difficult for them to land the former Brighton & Hove Albion star.

BVB need to act fast and start laying the groundwork for a deal now if they want a chance at snapping him up.
