Just over twelve months ago, Mats Hummels was unable to make the World Cup squad for Germany in Qatar, while in the summer, the 34-year-old was considered a rotational option in Edin Terzić’s backline. However, since the start of the season, Hummels has seen a rejuvenation in his career.
Julian Nagelsmann has reintroduced him into the national team, where he may partner Antonio Rüdiger at EURO 2024. As well as this, he has been a key figure for Dortmund this season as they look to hunt down the Meisterschale.
It has certainly been an unexpected turnaround for Hummels, who, according to Bild, was considering retiring just a matter of months ago. However, with his importance to the national team and Die Schwarzgelben almost at an all-time high, Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl should seriously consider offering the 34-year-old an extended deal with his contract set to expire in the summer.
BvB have been significantly reliant on their experienced players so far this campaign, with Hummels and Marco Reus guiding the side through difficult patches. With Hummels proving that he can still produce at the top level, he certainly is not someone that Dortmund should discard ahead of next season.
