Phillips eyes January exit from City amid betting scandal fallout

Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips is contemplating a potential January move away from the club to keep his 2024 European Championship aspirations alive, according to the Telegraph Sport. 

Interestingly, his exit is linked to the ongoing Italian betting scandal, which will likely shake up the transfer market.

Phillips has grown increasingly frustrated with his lack of playing time at City after warming the bench for the past season and a half.

His patience seems to be wearing thin, and recent developments may provide him with a timely opportunity to secure a starting role in another team.

Juventus and Newcastle United find themselves in an unexpected bind, as they must now search for cover for suspended midfielders. 

Juventus star Nicolo Fagioli has been banned for seven months, while Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali is also facing a lengthy suspension. 

To further complicate matters for Juventus, Paul Pogba has been suspended for an anti-doping offence. They need midfield reinforcements.

Moving to Juventus for the second half of the season could be an appealing solution for Phillips and Manchester City, especially since Juventus are not in the Champions League or any European competition for that matter. 

Newcastle have been sounding out interest in Phillips. Like Juventus, they are more likely to pursue a loan deal in January due to financial restrictions. 

Whether Manchester City would permit such a move to a Premier League rival remains to be seen.

Phillips initially wanted to stay and fight for his place at City, but his recent exclusion from the starting lineup in the last two games, when Rodri was suspended, has made him reconsider his options.

After helping England secure a spot in the 2024 European Championship, Phillips expressed his desire for regular game time. 

UEFA will likely limit England manager Gareth Southgate to a 23-man squad for Euro 2024. Phillips recognises the importance of securing a more consistent role in the starting eleven to ensure his place in the squad heading to Germany.

Besides Juventus and Newcastle, new Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has also shown keen interest in Phillips. 

If Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leaves Spurs in January, Phillips could find himself on Tottenham’s radar.
