In seasons past, the transfer window has often acted as an unwelcomed distraction for Borussia Dortmund as they try and survive with their squad intact. However, as January approaches rumours of players moving on from the Westfalenstadion are yet to surface at an alarming rate.
Nevertheless, while this is a positive for BvB, they will soon be hoping to have certain players off their wage bill. As reported by Bild, head coach Edin Terzić and sporting director Sebastian Kehl are hoping to add defensive reinforcement to their full-back areas.
While Ramy Bensebaini and Julian Ryerson have nailed down the full-back positions in the squad, depth is desired. Marius Wolf has been resigned to the bench, while Mateu Morey is out injured and Thomas Meunier has lost his place in the squad.
Therefore, with such a plethora of options in the full-back department, Dortmund cannot act until one of these players has been moved on from the side due to the inflated wage bill. However, the contacts of Wolf, Morey and Meunier are all set to expire in 2024, meaning that the summer would offer Die Schwarzgelben the perfect opportunity to strike in the transfer market.
The Black and Yellows will ideally target a technical full-back, who can offer creativity in attacking areas, in a similar manner to the recently departed Raphaël Guerreiro. Nevertheless, unless Kehl can sell one of his current options, a full-back signing in January seems significantly unlikely.
