After beating the United States 3-1 in his first game as Germany coach, Julian Nagelsmann singled out captain Ilkay Gündogan for praise.
“Ilkay Gündogan played an outstanding game. Madness!” Nagelsmann said in a post-match interview on the Barcelona midfielder, who levelled the scoreline after Christian Pulisic’s opener brought the hosts ahead.
“That was the kind of greed that we need in front of goal. Ilkay doesn’t stop, but keeps going. It was also a very good bit of play from Leroy [Sané].”
In general, Nagelsmann was pleased with what he saw from his team, especially after the break.
“The boys played very, very well after half-time. We had a lot of chances in the first half, too, but we didn’t have that much grip yet. We didn’t do everything right defensively either. But that’s normal at this stage. We still need to improve. Football-wise, the whole game was good. In the end we deserved to win. We made a very good step in terms of football,” Nagelsmann said.
