Bayern Munich board member and honorary president Uli Hoeness attacked Oliver Kahn in an interview with BR on Sunday, saying the decision to appoint the former goalkeeper as the club’s CEO was a mistake.

“Appointing Oliver Kahn as CEO was a big mistake. When I realized he couldn’t do it, I changed that with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge,” Hoeness said.

Kahn, who was sacked by Bayern at the end of last season, has now responded to Hoeness’ comments, saying they came as a surprise to him.

“To be honest, I’m surprised. FC Bayern and I agreed in the summer that we wanted to close this chapter amicably and that I would like to remain part of the FC Bayern family in the future. I still stand by that. The current statements by Uli Hoeneß do not necessarily contribute to a respectful relationship,” Kahn told the Bild newspaper, adding:

“In my role as chairman of the board of FC Bayern, I have always acted for the club to the best of my knowledge and conscience. Unfortunately, after some time it became clear that there were different ideas about the development and strategy of the club. In the end, it was better for everyone to go their own way. That says it all.

“Personally, I’ve made my peace with this chapter and – while remaining on friendly terms with the club – I’m optimistic about the future,” Kahn stressed.

Kahn has been replaced by Jan-Christian Dreesen.
