Joselu arrived at Real Madrid in the summer as Mariano Díaz’s replacement, but everything quickly changed when Karim Benzema left the Santiago Bernabéu for the Saudi Pro League and the club opted not to sign anyone else for their forward line.
Joselu’s role changed and he went from being a regular substitute to a starter in attack. The Spain international has endured a lot of criticism and doubts about whether or not he had the ability to be a Real Madrid striker. Those who accuse him of that, focus more on his weaknesses than on his strengths, while Joselu continues to do his thing in front of goal.
In Girona on Saturday, the 33-year-old scored his fourth league goal of the season, just one less than Robert Lewandowski, and has already become Real Madrid’s second highest scorer, behind Jude Bellingham who has six in the league. Between the pair, they have 10 goals in eight league games to date.
Joselu was a starter in Girona and opened the scoring after 17 minutes as Madrid ran out 3-0 winners to go top of La Liga.
