According to Bild, Borussia Dortmund missed out on the opportunity to sign current RB Leipzig forward Xavi Simons on loan in the summer.
Positive talks between Dortmund and Simons were held, with the 20-year-old interested in the opportunity to develop at the club while Dortmund were also big fans of the Dutch international’s talent.
However, the deal did not progress as Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl insisted on a loan with an option to buy, but PSG were not interested as they only wanted a straight up season-long loan. Additionally, the overall cost of the loan as well as the salary would have been too expensive for Dortmund.
In the end, Simons joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan and has hit the ground running. In his first four Bundesliga games, the 20-year-old has three goals and four assists and compared to the start that Dortmund’s attackers have had this season it looks like Dortmund missed the opportunity to bring in a player who could elevate an attack that has been on the decline.
