Kovac praises work of Wind and Mæhle: “I like Scandinavians.”

VfL Wolfsburg trainer Niko Kovac was all smiles one day after his “Danish Dynamite” duo of Jonas Wind and Joakim Mæhle lifted the team back up with a 2-1 win over 1. FC Union Berlin.

Goals from Danish internationals Jonas Wind and Joakim Mæhle proved sufficient to lift VfL Wolfsburg over 1. FC Union Berlin 2-1 yesterday. Germany’s green company team bounced back from their first defeat of the season in the final round before the international break and are up to fifth-place in the Bundesliga table; technically in a four-way-tie on nine points for third-place with Leipzig, Stuttgart, and Hoffenheim.

Wind and Mæhle oscillated between pride and humility when speaking on the result Sunday. Wind noted, with some sarcasm, that “Wolfsburg can thank the Danes.” Mæhle noted that his trademark goal celebration – tapping his nose with his index finger was a “not so special” gesture to say hello to friends from his tiny village of Østervrå on the the northern tip of the peninsula.

As unremarkable as Mæhle’s hometown may be, there remains much remarkable about how the Danish duo have been performing for both club and country as of late. Both players got on the scoresheet during a Danish Euro qualifying win over San Marino over the international break.

With five tallies through four rounds, Wind is currently in second place behind Serhou Guirassy in the Bundesliga scorer race. Mæhle now has both a league goal and assist.

VfL trainer Niko Kovac lauded the tandem at his Sunday presser.

“I like Scandinavians,” Kovac noted, “They have a super attitude, a super mentality, and are very friendly people. ‘Danish Dynamite’. That suits us perfectly.”
