Koeman reveals reason for excluding Frimpong from Netherlands squad

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has explained why he has decided not to include Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong in his squad for this month’s games.

Despite playing at a consistently high level for Bayer Leverkusen for some time now, Jeremie Frimpong has yet to make his Netherlands debut.

Since taking over as Netherlands coach after the World Cup, Ronald Koeman has not included Frimpong in his squad, and surprisingly, the Leverkusen star was again left out for this month’s games against Greece and Ireland.

At a press conference, Koeman was asked why Frimpong wasn’t included, and he revealed that the decision was made because the 22-year-old turned down an invitation to play in the Under-21 European Championship despite being fit.

“You can see it as a kind of punishment,” Koeman said, as quoted by Football-Oranje.com.

“I think there should be an obligation for players to play for the national team. If you think you can pull out of the Dutch juniors and want to be with the Dutch national team the day after tomorrow, yes, that is not the way we think about internationals. He understands that.”
