Sheffield United have announced the signing of Brazilian defensive midfielder Vinicius Souza.
The 24-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the newly Promoted Blades after joining from Belgian outfit Lommel SK for an undisclosed fee.
Souza spent last season on loan at Espanyol and was part of the squad that was relegated to the Spanish second division after finishing 19th on the La Liga rankings.
The Brazilian was a prominent figure in the middle of the park, registering 37 appearances across all competitions for the Barcelona-based club while chipping in with a goal and an assist.
He becomes the fifth summer signing to join United during the transfer window and will bolster Paul Heckingbottom’s midfield options, with the Blades looking to avoid a swift return to the Championship.
“I’m very happy to be here, signing for the Blades,” Souza said after signing on the dotted line. “I want to say thank you to everyone for making this happen.
“The coach sent me messages of support. I’m very happy. It is my dream to play in the Premier League – I don’t care who I play against.”
Heckingbottom also added: “Vini is athletic, enjoys the defensive side of the game and likes to compete. We know we are getting a good player, and he knows what role we want him to perform for us.
“He is someone we have known for a long time, and I’m delighted we’ve been able to get him on a permanent deal.
“There has been a lot of hard work gone into getting him to Bramall Lane, and I think that’s why he has chosen us over other options.”
Souza is expected to replace Sander Berge, who joined Championship winners Burnley in a £15 million deal. Although the Blades still retain an interest in Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone.
They have already seen a bid rejected for the Irishman but are likely to improve their proposal in the coming days.
