Tottenham nearing agreement to sign Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven

The Athletic report today that Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of reaching an agreement with Wolfsburg to sign Dutch international defender Micky van de Ven (22) in a deal worth €50m including bonuses.

If an agreement is found, Van de Ven will travel to London to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract. Tottenham’s interest in the player has been well documented with the Premier League side earlier reaching an agreement on personal terms with the Dutchman.

Able to operate in various defensive positions, whether it’s on the left-side of a back three, in a back four, or at left-back, Van de Ven was a standout performer for Wolfsburg last season, playing 36 games across all competitions.

The defender’s transfer to Tottenham would become Wolfsburg’s second biggest departure after Kevin de Bruyne’s €76m move to Manchester City in 2015. The €50m fee that VfL receive will go towards a rebuild and could be a catalyst in their recruitment as they attempt to sign Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer, with personal terms agreed. They have found the €25m asking price to be too much up until now, but with newfound finances, the Wolves may be able to make a suitable offer to the French side.
