With Lesley Ugochukwu on the verge of sealing a surprise move to Chelsea, Rennes will now need to turn their attention towards bringing in a defensive midfielder to make up for the 19-year-old’s departure. The shortlist they have drawn up includes two former Blues players.
According to L’Équipe this afternoon, Tiémoué Bakayoko has been identified as a potential recruit. The 28-year-old came through the youth academy at Rennes, playing one season in the first team before moving on to Monaco in 2014. He has been a free agent since leaving Chelsea at the end of last season, having spent two years on loan at Milan.
Another name on the shortlist is the veteran Nemanja Matić, who is currently at Roma. The Serbian spent three years at Chelsea before moving on to Manchester United, where he stayed for five campaigns. His profile has been put forward at Rennes as an option, although initial moves have already been made to bring back Bakayoko. The Bretons will play in the Europa League next season, having finished in 4th place last year.
