Borussia Dortmund have announced that Emre Can will take the captain’s armband ahead of the new season.
The previous captain, Marco Reus, decided to step down from the captaincy whilst on holiday with his family at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. Can was amongst one of the favourites alongside goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
The news indicates that Can will play a vital role in the BVB squad this year. Earlier in the transfer window, Dortmund were searching for a new centre midfielder following the transfer of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid. The black and yellows came close to signing Mexican international Edson Álvarez, but the move proved too costly from Dortmund’s point of view.
It now means that BVB will rely on Can on a much more regular basis with little cover.
The 29-year-old moved to Dortmund in 2020 and is just shy of his 100th competitive game for the club.
