Borussia Dortmund confirmed that Emré Can would inherit the captain’s armband from Marco Reus late yesterday.

“The season hasn’t been satisfying for me at all”

Three weeks after German footballing legend Marco Reus announced that he would be stepping down as Borussia Dortmund skipper, the BVB’s new squad captain has been confirmed. Resurgent German international Emré Can will don the armband for the coming 2023/24 campaign. This news was confirmed from Dortmund’s traveling training camp in San Diego on Wednesday evening.

Can proved a crucial figure in head-coach Edin Terzic;’s 4-1-4-1 during the team’s impressive second half of the recently completed season. The 29-year-old – following some talk of a transfer out – was also signed to a contract extension last weekend. Defender Niklas Süle and keeper Gregor Kobel will serve as alternates.

“Emre Can is the new captain of our team,” Terzic said in California yesterday, “Gregor Kobel is his deputy, Niklas Süle is also part of it. The team council will also include Marco Reus, Sebastien Haller and Julian Brandt.”

“It makes me proud to lead the team onto the field as captain for such a club,” the player himself added, “I’m grateful to those responsible for putting their trust in me. I will continue like this, will not change. I also know that I can’t do the job alone.”
