Manchester City have reportedly received a blow in their pursuit of Barcelona winger Raphinha.
Recent reports suggested Pep Guardiola’s side are eyeing a move for the 26-year-old as a replacement for Riyad Mahrez.
The Algerian played an instrumental role in helping City win the continental treble last season, but he is now said to be ready to take a new challenge elsewhere.
Mahrez looks close to joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, having agreed personal terms with them.
However, AS journalist Javi Miguel reports the Catalans regard Raphinha as a ‘non-transferable’ player, with Xavi Hernandez counting on him for the 2023-24 campaign.
The Brazilian joined Barcelona last summer from Leeds United in a deal worth around £50 million.
He made a positive start to life in Spain, netting 10 goals and providing 12 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.
The 26-year-old made valuable contributions to help Barca win the La Liga title as well as the Supercopa de Espana last term.
He averaged 2.2 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in the Spanish top-flight while boasting almost 80 percent passing accuracy (as per Whoscored).
Considering his impact in his debut season at Camp Nou, it is understandable that the Blaugrana don’t want to part with him this summer.
It looks City will have to look elsewhere to sign a replacement for Mahrez.
The Citizens have already lost Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona, while Aymeric Laporte has been linked with a return to Athletic Bilbao.
