Chelsea have this afternoon announced that French defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery, and as a result will miss out on the team’s pre-season tour of the United States.
The setback is the former Saint-Étienne man’s third major injury since moving to the Premier League. He missed most of the 2021/22 campaign, when he was at Leicester, after suffering a broken leg in a pre-season friendly.
Soon after his move to Chelsea last summer, a major knee injury kept him out of action up until February. In the end, he will have made 15 appearances with the Blues this past campaign. He was eventually called up to the France squad and capped at senior level for the first time back in June, having had to withdraw from the call-ups back in March due to a hamstring problem shortly after his return from the knee injury. He will now be unvailable for another lengthy spell.
