In 2012, Sergio Aguero scored a memorable winner for Manchester City on the last day of the campaign to secure the Premier League title. Fast forward, ten years and history seem to have repeated itself with Pep Guardiola’s men making another incredible second-half comeback to get over the finishing line just ahead of Liverpool in what turned out to be a fantastic Premier League title race this season.

Final Day Drama At The Etihad Stadium

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa proved to be quite a tough test for the Mancunian giants earlier today as the Villans managed to go up 2-0 ahead courtesy of a good header from Matty Cash in the first half and Philippe Coutinho’s tidy finish in the 69th minute.

However, Man City’s super-sub, Ilkay Gundogan made a real difference off the bench and scored two quick-fire goals before Rodri completed the incredible comeback in the 78th minute with a cool finish. Guardiola’s players ended up securing the all-important win by a narrow 3-2 scoreline which kept the Premier League trophy at the blue half of Manchester.

Man City Crowned 2021-22 Premier League Champions: Deserved Winners?

Kevin De Bruyne was by far the best player for Man City for most of this campaign. Ederson was also stellar for the newly crowned Premier League champions over the past ten months as he finished the campaign in style by sharing the golden glove award with Liverpool’s Alisson Becker.

Guardiola has truly built a dynasty at the Etihad Stadium as this league title marks his ninth major trophy during his managerial career in English football so far.

This second-half comeback proves why Man City are worthy champions even though they ended up getting over the finishing line with just a point separating them from their Merseyside rivals.

With the arrival of Erling Haaland at Man City later this summer, Guardiola and the club’s fans have every reason to be optimistic about their chances of retaining the Premier League title once again next season. Hence, we can expect them to continue their dominance in English football and maybe, even end their wait for the UEFA Champions trophy in the not-too-distant future.
