Tottenham Hotspur have agreed personal terms with Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Spurs will continue their negotiations with the Foxes as they seek to agree on a price for the attacking midfielder. They want to conclude a deal this week.
The 26-year-old is a top target for the North London club, but they have been trying to beat down Leicester’s £60 million valuation of their star man.
Spurs want to offer £40 million as a fixed fee and then add-ons.
Maddison scored ten goals and assisted nine more for a Leicester City side that suffered relegation to the Championship.
Despite his side’s drop into the second division, he is one of the few that can raise his head high.
Tottenham are seeking a playmaker to make things happen in the final third and have turned to Maddison.
They must move quickly to snap him up before Newcastle United re-enter the frame to sign him. He has been a target for the Magpies for some time, but they are distracted trying to complete a deal for Sandro Tonali first.
Leicester rejected two bids for the England international last summer from Newcastle. There were more links in January, but he stayed with the Foxes. He looks set to leave this summer, and might be heading to London, not Tyneside.
After signing Maddison, Spurs could return for his Leicester teammate Harvey Barnes. They want to sign him too for new boss Ange Postecoglou.
Also, they will need to sign defenders ahead of next season. Tottenham were poor defensively in their Premier League campaign, conceding 63 goals in 38 matches. Only five teams conceded more goals than Spurs.
There will likely be a defensive overhaul with Davinson Sanchez preparing to leave and Clement Lenglet returning to Barcelona following his unremarkable loan spell in England.
Tottenham have been linked to several centre-backs but have not made a concrete move for anyone.
