Eighteen-year-old defensive midfielder Ethan Kohler has signed on with German Hanseatic club SV Werder Bremen. The California native joins Bremen from the Oakland Roots of America’s second-tier football league, the USL championship. In a statement released by the club accompanying the signing, licensing director Clemens Fritz outlined a clear developmental path for the teenage prospect.
“Our goal for now is to use Ethan in both the U19s and the U23s,” Fritz explained, “Ethan is a very ambitious player, with a good overview and good understanding of the game. He is well trained in football and can play as a center back as well as a six. We see him primarily at the six position and want to develop him further there.”
“It is of course a huge step for me to move from America to Europe,” the player himself added, “But Werder is a big club in Germany and I’m really looking forward to the challenge in Bremen.”
