Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly is a target for Saudi Arabian clubs as they look to add several stars to their roster, according to Matteo Moretto.
The 31-year-old had a poor campaign after he joined the Blues this summer from Napoli in a deal worth around £35 million.
Koulibaly failed to adapt to his new surroundings and has sometimes looked out of place.
Many reasons abound for the poor performances. The season itself was not a stable one for the West Londoners.
Several players underperformed due to the lack of cohesion at the club.
Chelsea’s new owners, Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Capital Consortium, constructed a bloated squad and sifted through four managers as they searched for someone to gel the players into a force.
It is not unusual for some players to struggle to adapt to their new environment.
However, Koulibaly is an experienced head that many expected to kick on immediately and bring calm at the back. That was not the case.
Chelsea might look to cut costs and sell the Senegal international after only one season. He is one of the highest earners at Chelsea, and they would not mind shifting him on.
Saudi Arabia preparing a contract
The Saudi League looks like a possible destination for the former Genk centre-back. He has interest from Inter Milan and other clubs in Europe, but the Saudi offer might move him.
Saudi Arabia has been giving bumper salaries to attract some of football’s biggest names to the Gulf nation. Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante have already accepted mammoth contracts.
The Saudis have many names on their list, including Luka Modric, Wilfried Zaha, Steven Gerrard, Koulibaly, and many more.
They already have Cristiano Ronaldo. Adding these stars will only attract more eyes to the Saudi Pro League.
Koulibaly reportedly hopes to stay at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place, but it does not look like incoming head coach Mauricio Pochettino has him in his plans.
The former Napoli man might consider the move to Saudi Arabia.
