In a recent report, The Mirror stated that Newcastle United have been offered a chance to sign Manchester United defender Eric Bailly. It is believed that Man United’s new manager, Erik ten Haag wants to cut the Ivory Coast international loose during the transfer window with the Magpies hoping to sign a new defender this summer.
Bailly’s Growing Struggles At Old Trafford Last Season
Bailly endured another frustrating campaign at Manchester as he struggled to play an important role for the Red Devils over the past ten months. The 28-year-old was involved in just seven matches for the Mancunian side last season in multiple competitions.
The Ivory Coast defensive ace did well to impress in the limited game time he received in the league after he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was accurate with his ball distribution after he completed 80% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Is Bailly The Right Fit For Newcastle United Head Coach Eddie Howe?
Bailly can be a solid presence inside his half when he is playing regularly on the pitch. He is a decent tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to make a few important interceptions on the defensive third of the field. The Ivory international doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when needed and can use his powerful 1.87m frame to dominate the aerial battle against the opposition.
Bailly will add more bite and steel to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe‘s defence and could play a key role for them as they look to push for a European place in the Premier League next season.
Thus, the Magpies should focus on moving in for Bailly as he might be available on a cut-price deal this summer as Man United are inclined to let him leave before the end of this transfer window. At 28, Bailly is in his prime and could be a good fit for the Tyneside giants in this off-season as he will definitely increase competition for places within Howe’s match-day squad.
