Antonio Rüdiger turned down Barcelona to join Real Madrid

New Real Madrid signing Antonio Rüdiger has confirmed he turned down Barcelona in order to sign for Los Blancos.

“The first time I spoke with Ancelotti was in April and that contact was very important, that’s when I decided to play for this club,” he said at his official unveiling on Monday.

“Other people have contacted me, but I was convinced of what I wanted. There was an offer from Barcelona but I told my agent it’s Real Madrid or nothing.”

“Ancelotti told me that he wanted me at Real Madrid and that he trusted me and that he would depend on me. That’s enough for me,” he added.

“It’s Madrid and you can’t guarantee anything but I’m ready to fight to play.”

He also discussed playing in El Clásico this summer as part of Madrid’s tour of the USA.

“It’s the most important game there is and even though it’s a pre-season game we want to win. I’m excited to play this game instead of watching it on TV.”

The 29-year-old will wear the number 22 shirt for Madrid next season.
