At the end of March, Kicker reported exclusively of Brentford’s interest in Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken (29) and now their latest report suggests that a transfer is imminent.
Flekken, who signed a contract extension in September, has a reported €13m exit clause which is expected to be activated by Premier League side Brentford. Just 10 days ago, SCF sporting director Jochen Saier confirmed that the Dutchman’s tendency is to leave the club in the summer: “For him, it’s also about when he can take the next big step again.”
With the departure of Flekken, Freiburg are expected to make Noah Atubolu (20) their number one stopper next season. In his 56 games in the 3. Liga, Atubolu has kept 25 clean sheets and has already received praise from the club’s management to succeed Flekken.
With one game remaining, Freiburg still have an opportunity to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League ahead of Union Berlin, but they must better Union’s result. Freiburg travel to Frankfurt whilst Union host Werder Bremen.
