Toulouse’s Zakaria Aboukhlal denies alleged sexist comment towards elected official

Toulouse forward Zakaria Aboukhlal has released a statement this Thursday, in response to allegations he made a sexist comment to an elected official in the midst of the team’s Coupe de France victory celebrations.

The accusations, made in an article by RMC Sport, have led to his suspension by Toulouse pending an internal club investigation. He is reported to have responded to Laurence Arribagé, the city’s deputy mayor for sports, after the latter told the team to be quiet during a speech by manager Philippe Montanier with the following: “Where I’m from, women don’t talk to men like that.”

In his statement this morning, the Moroccan international has indicated that he met with Arribagé again following the publication of the article, and that they both agreed that the outlet’s version of events did not match what happened during the festivities. In the original piece, RMC had indicated that they had spoken to Arribagé, who had confirmed that she told the players to be quiet, but denied their reporting of Aboukhlal’s alleged reply.

“We would like to put an end to this controversy which has strongly affected both of us as well as our families.”
