Aston Villa’s longest serving player set to leave the club this summer

Jed Steer is set to leave Aston Villa at the end of this season, according to The Athletic.

The 30-year-old has been on the books of the Midlands club since 2013 and is currently their longest serving player.

He hasn’t played for his side in the Premier League since September 2021 when he was featured between the sticks because Emiliano Martinez had international duty.

It wasn’t one of Steer’s best displays as he conceded three goals with Villa losing 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

He was loaned out to Luton Town for the second half of the 2021-22 season but managed to make only three Championship appearances for the Hatters.

The former Norwich City player has been out of action since rupturing his Achilles tendon.

His first-team prospects at the Lions look very slim with three goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order.

Robin Olsen, who arrived at the club last year, has been playing as second fiddle to Martinez while the Lions also have the services of Finland international Viljami Sinisalo.

Steer’s current contract will expire in June and he is not expected to be given a new deal.

The 30-year-old has made only 36 appearances for Aston Villa during his 10-year stay at the club.

However, he is still very popular among fans due to his important contributions during their 2018-19 promotion-winning campaign.

The English goalkeeper featured in 16 Championship matches to help his side to a fifth-place finish.

He also started Villa’s playoffs’ wins over West Bromwich Albion and Derby County as they won promotion to the top-flight.
