Jonathan Schmid’s time with SC Freiburg draws to a close. Breisgauer gaffer Christian Streich confirmed that the 32-year-old’s expiring contract would not be renewed whilst speaking at a Wednesday presser. The native of nearby Strasbourg come up through the SCF academy ranks, returning to his youth club in 2019 after stints with Hoffenheim and Augsburg.
As of yet, there is no word as to whether the Frenchman – who has only played professionally in Germany – will be continuing his career elsewhere. Schmid never regained relevance in Streich’s plans ever since a bout with long COVID that began in the autumn of 2021. In a December interview, the player declared himself content with Freiburg even if he wasn’t playing.
