Recent reports from Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport state that Manchester United are keen on signing Roma striker Tammy Abraham in the ongoing transfer window as Erik Ten Hag looks set to add to his attacking options ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Abraham, one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings at the Stadio Olimpico, is considered untouchable by The Special One. However, Roma are not against the idea of selling the England international if they receive a crazy offer exceeding double the fee they paid for him last year (£34 million). Having fallen in love with The Yellow and Reds, Abraham is not in a hurry to depart Italy either.
“Like I’ve always said, I fell in love with this club from the first day and I will always help the team as much as possible with my goals and assists.” – he told DAZN (published by Football Italia ) ahead of the Conference League final win against Feyenoord.
“I love this club. They’ve given me the opportunity to show myself, my heart is here. We’ll see what the future holds, but my heart is here.”
While Arsenal are also keen on securing the player’s services, Chelsea have a buy-back clause that will allow them to bring back their academy product to west London for a fee in the region of £68 million in 2023.
Having come through the ranks at Chelsea, Tammy Abraham joined Serie A side Roma, in the summer of 2021 after the Blues re-signed Romelu Lukaku for a fee in the region of £100 million. It would be an understatement to say that the Englishman enjoyed a brilliant debut season under Mourinho’s stewardship – scoring twenty-six goals and assisting five more in 51 appearances across all competitions.
Besides, he managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board the last term as he averaged 2.6 shots, one key pass, one dribble, and 0.7 tackles per ninety minutes in the Italian top-flight. With eight goals in twelve UEFA Conference League matches, the number nine played an integral role in Roma’s quest for their first trophy since 2008 and first-ever major European honour. Furthermore, with an average WhoScored rating of 7.12, he established himself as one of Europe’s best strikers in the past season.
The Ideal Addition To Ten Hag’s Squad?
Considering his age and quality, the England star would be the perfect long-term addition to Manchester United’s front line. Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, cannot be deployed in the lone striker role week in and week out, but the Reds Devils struggle to convert their chances when the Portugal international is not on the pitch. Signing someone of Abraham’s calibre would improve the team’s conversion rate while adding quality depth in the attack.
Although it’s hard to predict how he would perform in the Premier League, Manchester United should not be timid about their efforts to secure his signature, especially given that Liverpool recently invested £67 million on a player of a similar profile.
