Mowbray addresses Sunderland future after Luton defeat

Tony Mowbray has said that he is uncertain about his future at Sunderland after his side lost the Championship play-off semi-final to Luton Town.

The Black Cats entered the match on Tuesday with a 2-1 lead after their victory at the Stadium of Light. But they fell to a disappointing 2-0 loss in the away leg to lose the tie on 3-2 aggregate.

Gabriel Osho delivered an early breakthrough for the Hatters with a close range finish before Tom Lockyer doubled their advantage with a header just before the break.

The visitors failed to make a comeback in the second half as their dream of Premier League promotion ended in the semi-final.

In his post match interview, Tony Mowbray admitted he is not sure about his future next season at the Stadium of Light.

The 59-year-old came into the job in August last year, replacing Alex Neil. He has a contract at the club until the end of the next season.

However, he said (as per The Athletic): “I don’t know (about my future), I’ll just get on with it. I’ve got a contract and I’ll just keep going. I only mention it after the speculation over recent weeks but let’s wait and see.

“Modern day football clubs can do what they want. I’m pretty relaxed about it.”

Sunderland returned to the Championship following their promotion through the League One play-offs last season, with the Black Cats defeating Wycombe Wanderers in the final.

However, they failed to secure back to back promotions after finishing sixth in the league table.

Tony Mowbray’s men were on a 10-match unbeaten run and were regarded as favourites against Luton after their first-leg victory.

But their forwards failed to breach the Hatters’ defences with Amad Diallo, Joe Gelhardt and Alex Pritchard all giving underwhelming performances. While their defenders, apart from Trai Hume, were also far from convincing in Tuesday’s game.

Now Luton will face either Middlesbrough or Coventry City in the final at Wembley.
