Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants David de Gea to sign a new contact despite his costly error against West Ham United on Sunday.
The 32-year-old let a tame Said Benrahma effort slip through his grasp to put the Hammers a goal ahead in the first-half.
United failed to make a comeback and ultimately slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the London Stadium.
De Gea’s current deal at Old Trafford is set to expire this summer but he is yet to pen an extension.
Despite his big mistake on Sunday, manager Erik ten Hag still wants to keep the Spaniard beyond the summer.
‘We want him to stay and we want him to extend his contract,’ Ten Hag said (via the Daily Mail). ‘He has the most clean sheets in the Premier League. We would not be here in this position without him.”
Manchester United have put themselves in a difficult position with back-to-back defeats in the English top-flight.
Sunday’s latest setback leaves them only a point ahead of Liverpool who are now on a six-game winning run.
The Red Devils will be under huge pressure to pick up points from their remaining four fixtures and they have only themselves to blame for getting into this situation.
Fortunately three of these games are at Old Trafford, where they boast an impressive record this season.
United will host Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend before taking a trip to Bournemouth on May 20.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea will subsequently visit Manchester, with Erik ten Hag’s men playing their final game of the season against Fulham.
None of these sides look formidable opponents but United cannot take anything for granted given their current form.
They have been brilliant throughout the 2022-23 campaign and missing out on the top-four now would be no less than a disaster for them.
