Investigation opened over fan attacks after Lyon-Marseille

Le Monde via AFP report this afternoon that a police investigation has been opened over “aggravated violence” following clashes between fans in the wake of Marseille’s win over Lyon on Sunday night.

A video circulating on social media, which BFM Lyon indicate was indeed filmed after the match outside the stadium, shows supporters fighting, and in particular a black man being attacked on the ground while racist insults are heard in the background.

The video ends with a cloud of tear gas, ostensibly as the authorities looked to defuse the situation. The fight was later confirmed by the police authorities for the Rhône – the department which covers the city of Lyon – who have explained that an intervention was needed between 10.30pm and 10.50pm in order to quell “a situation linked to a fight”. Two individuals, they add, were injured, while another two were arrested. Further incidents took place around 11pm local time, at which point the tear gas in question was used.

Lyon themselves have confirmed to AFP that incidents took place in the car park outside the stadium, and have “condemned the violence and remarks heard in the video”. The club also calls on any victims to lodge a legal complaint, which as of yet has not been done.
