Ko Itakura to sign for Borussia Mönchengladbach

Ko Itakura is set to sign for Borussia Mönchengladbach from Manchester City, according to Sport1

The Japanese international spent the last season on loan at Schalke 04 as he helped guide them to the 2. Bundesliga title.

Schalke hoped to make Itakura’s move permanent but due to weak transfer funds, the royal blues were unable to come to an agreement with the Premier League champions.

This paved the way for Mönchengladbach who will pay around €5m for the defender whose new contract with Gladbach will run until 2026.

Other teams such as Frankfurt and Hoffenheim did show interest but Gladbach appear to have got their man.

Last season Itakura played 31 times for Schalke in all competitions and scored on four occasions.

Having only played one season in German football, the defender brings with him a winning mentality having helped Schake navigate one of the most competitive 2. Bundesliga’s in recent memory.
