Leandro Barreiro continued his impressive season for Mainz in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Bayern Munich, capping a fine display with a goal as ‘Die Nullfünfer’ shocked the German champions.
Barreiro’s form hasn’t gone unnoticed, according to Mainz sporting director Martin Schmidt, who told reporters after the game that the 23-year-old’s performance was watched by “half of Europe in the stands”.
“‘Leo’ has played himself into completely different books than before, but we are trying everything to expand with him,” Schmidt added.
If Mainz don’t succeed in extending Barreiro’s contract, the club could cash in on him in the summer to avoid losing him for free in 2024 when his contract expires.
