Reims were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Rennes this Saturday, for game week 31 of the Ligue 1 season. It is the heaviest defeat for the Champagne side since the Anglo-Belgian coaching sensation Will Still took over earlier this season. The visitors were unable to fight back after Rennes’ winger Jérémy Doku scored a brace within ten minutes early in the first half, before Belgian centre-back Arthur Theate put the icing on the cake in the second half.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport, Still did not hold back in assessing his side’s underwhelming display at the Roazhon Park. “You just can’t play as bad as that and hope for more. The reality was pretty clear today. We were not good and Rennes fully deserved their win”, added the 30-year-old boss. Still took his share of the blame and said he undertook full responsibility for his side’s loss. “Perhaps my message was not clear or intelligible enough for my players.”
However, Still concluded that mental as well as physical wear and tear could explain the magnitude of his second Ligue 1 loss as head coach of Reims. “We have a small squad. Our guys play a lot. I have to find an answer to remedy this. Our limits were on show today, and thinking about qualifying for Europe or bulls**t like that is useless.” Reims remain in 8th place and will host Strasbourg next week.
