FC Union Berlin officially confirmed the arrival of 23-year-old keeper Lennart Grill on Thursday evening. Germany’s preeminent footballing publication reports that their is an option to buy after the Leverkusen gloveman’s loan deal expires at the end of next season.

Die Eisernen of Berlin’s Köpenick quarter struck quickly to find a roster replacement for the departed Andreas Luthe. Rumors that Leverkusen net-minder Lennart Grill was headed to the capital city were promptly confirmed on Thursday evening. According to German footballing magazine Kicker, the former DFB Junior joins Union Berlin on a season-long-loan with a purchase option.

It remains unclear who the club has slated for the #1 slot next season. If statements by FCU manager Oliver Ruhnert are to be believed, it would appear as if Grill is expected to compete with Danish keeper Frederick Rønnow for the first-choice spot between the sticks.

“Lennart is a very interesting young goalkeeper who has great potential,” Ruhnert noted, “He will play an important role in the squad and make our team stronger in the upcoming Bundesliga season.”

“I’m really looking forward to the move to Berlin,” Grill himself added, “For me, it’s not simply a matter of playing for a special club. It’s also about improving steadily, integrating quickly into the team and making my contribution to a successful season.”

Grill has not been a #1 since departing 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 2020. At Germany’s red company team, he rarely got playing time behind squad captain Lukas Hradecky. Out on loan to Norwegian side SK Brann, he made only nine starts.
