Bruno Génésio on future as Rennes manager: “If we don’t qualify for Europe, we’ll see.”

Following reports earlier this week from RMC that Rennes manager Bruno Génésio could leave the Bretons at the end of the season, the former Lyon man has admitted that a potential departure could be a topic of discussion should the team miss out on Europe this spring.

“I’ll still have two years left on my contract at the end of the season, if we’re not in Europe it’ll be a personal failure, we’ll see at that stage. The club responded well to the reports. I have nothing else to add, whether it be regarding my personal situation or that of Rennes.”

The reports – which also brought up the possibility of Génésio retiring from coaching altogether at the age of 56 – were vehemently denied by the club in a statement later in the evening.

The team’s sole win in their last four games came at the Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain, with Lille leapfrogging them into fifth in that time. Given none of the league frontrunners are involved in the Coupe de France anymore – Nantes face Toulouse in the final – fifth place will be the final qualifying spot for Europe, in this case for a place in the Conference League. Génésio and his team travel to face his former side Lyon on Sunday for the midday kick-off, with Les Gones in turmoil themselves after crashing out of the Coupe de France this week.
