French government approves three-year trial of pyrotechnics in sports stadiums

According to L’Équipe the French government  will allow experimental use of pyrotechnics in non-covered sports arenas for three years, according to a decree published on Wednesday in the official government statement, released today.

The trial will begin on Thursday and aims to facilitate the safe use of flares and other pyrotechnics by fans during sporting events.

Professional sports clubs, in conjunction with supporter groups and local authorities, will be able to organise pyrotechnic displays in what the legal text has prescribed as “predetermined, controlled and secure areas”.

The objective, according to the French government, is to move towards the “eradication of illegal and unsafe use of pyrotechnics in sports stadiums”.

At the end of last May, in the wake of the fiasco of the organisation of the Champions League final at the Stade de France and at the end of a season under tension in French stadiums, the Ministry of Sports announced a desire for “dialogue” with supporters groups and the police. The new announcement by the French goverment could be seen as the product of talks between supporters and the authorities.
