Speaking to TF1 journalist Saber Desfarges, France manager Didier Deschamps praised Mike Maignan (28), who he recently elected as his new number-one goalkeeper.
Deschamps announced last Monday that Maignan was France’s new first-choice goalkeeper. Since becoming manager of Les Bleus, that role has always belonged to Hugo Lloris. However, the former France captain, who became France’s most-capped player of all time during the recent World Cup in Qatar, announced his retirement from international football in the wake of the tournament.
It is therefore Maignan, who already had five France caps prior to Friday night’s match against the Netherlands, who has inherited the gloves. During that match, the AC Milan goalkeeper made a late penalty save from Memphis Depay to keep a clean sheet as France won 4-0 to kick off their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign in perfect fashion.
In an interview with TF1, Deschamps was full of praise for his new number-one. “He really oozes confidence and calmness. He is also a leader. I had no doubts about Mike, about what he is capable of,” said the France manager.
