Sport Bild reports that Mats Hummels could retire from football when his contract with Borussia Dortmund expires at the end of the season.
Although Hummels is currently pain-free, he has struggled with persistent knee problems in recent years, with the report stating that “it is by no means” certain that the 34-year-old will continue his career beyond the summer.
Should Hummels sign a new deal with Dortmund, his annual salary would be halved from €10 million to €5 million, and the contract would be performance-based to a great extent.
There is also the possibility that the central defender will move abroad, with a transfer within Europe seen more likely than a move to a different continent.
